THE GOVERNMENT SHALL BE UPON HIS SHOULDER

Isaiah 9: 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

For to us a child is born:

This is in fulfilment of Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” For man was given the responsibility of headship.  And God used His Son Jesus, a man to take carry out the authority of redemption: a man born of a woman and called the seed of a woman.  Both man and woman played a part in redemption but the Redeemer Himself had to be a man born of a woman to fulfil prophecy and meet God’s demands; Gal 4:But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law.

The Government shall be upon His Shoulder:

The authority of God’s rule shall be upon His shoulder.  What we need now, more than ever in our lifetime, is someone to shoulder the burden, someone who can get under  and pick up our multiple problems and carry them for us.  This person is our Lord and Saviour Jesus.  It should be obvious by now that nobody nationally or globally has the slightest idea how to address, let alone solve, the crisis that has come swiftly upon us.

We are prone to shoulder all or problems, all our cares, all our frustrations, and carry them ourselves, when all the time the government of the work should be upon the shoulders of our great Master whom we serve, Jesus. This is His work, not ours!  1 Corin 15:  27 For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.     This is another evidence that the government of His work in these perilous times must rest safely upon His shoulder.   Every circumstance is under control when it is on His shoulder.

Wonderful Counsellor:

Our Lord Jesus was born a miracle.  What a blessed assurance to know at such times that the Wonderful Counsellor is at our side to take over.  James 1:5  “If any of you does not know how to meet any particular problem he has only to ask God—who gives generously to all men”   Our God is the One who deliberates and gives guidance.  He is the Supreme Counsellor, He is the One who is qualified to give counsel and advice to all created beings.  Ps 89: And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O LordYour faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints.   His wisdom is enough to meet any situation no matter how menacing or how complex it may appear to us.  He is The One who places His wisdom at our disposal; his is “greater than Solomon” (Luke 11:31).  Christ is ever sending messages to those who listen for His voice.

The mighty God:

When our life is in God’s hand it is in good hands. We need not worry. He is the El Shaddai—the God who is enough, the God who is able! He is able to protect and to direct His work under the most trying, discouraging circumstances.  He is the mighty Almighty; the Strong One, the Conquering God.  Should we not repose our confidence serenely in Him? If we trust we will not worry. When we worry we do not trust!

In John 16:30, the disciples said,  Now are we sure that thou knowest all things.  In the darkest days, when appearances seem most forbidding, fear not. Have faith in God, he knows your needs.  He has all power, He will not fail of fulfilling His promise to you.

The everlasting Father:

He is the Father of eternity and the Planner of the Ages.    Some have suggested that the title means that this coming Messiah is also the creator of everything: He is the father of time and eternity, the “architect of the ages.”  The full identity of the Messiah—that He is God in the flesh, the second Person of the Trinity, who would protect and provide for His people by His death and resurrection on their behalf; and that Gentiles could also be grafted into the family of Israel—may be hinted at in Isaiah, but God’s people would have to wait almost 700 years to see the Messiah revealed in the “fullness of time” (see Galatians 4:4).  The emphasis is forward looking, so “everlasting” not only indicates “without end” but also “without beginning.”

The Prince of Peace:

When the storms of revolt and political intrigue rage about us, the Prince of Peace will shelter us under the shadow of His wings. On stormy Galilee, while the angry billows tossed and foamed, the disciples laboured and worried while the Source of their peace slept quietly in the bottom of the boat. Only when they realised their efforts were inadequate and they turned to Him was calm restored. The Master spoke, Mark 4:39 Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Today the governments of nations have to go back to being upon His shoulder. The burden of the work is too great for us to bear in our own strength.  Our counsel must come from the Wonderful Counsellor, who does wonders and marvellous things. Only the everlasting Father can help us face our problems.  Only the mighty God is able to deal with the mighty issues around the world today. Only the Prince of Peace can bring lasting tranquillity to our troubled world.  The government of our work in this world must be upon His shoulder.
