THE POWER IN THE TONGUE

Power in the tongue

Power in the tongue

The Bible is rife with passages about us speaking good to ourselves and this year will not be an exception to us doing what God wants us to do.  We are used to saying AMEN to men and women of God blessing us.

This year, God wants us to form the habit of regularly blessing ourselves.   Proverbs 18:21 tells us that ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

God created the heavens earth by the power of spoken word.  Gen  1:3 ‘God said. “let there be light,”, and there was light.’

1 Pet 3:10 states ‘For he who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile.’

One chapter that talks about blessing and curses in the Bible is Deu 28.  Let’s speak the blessings over our lives:

“I will be blessed in the city, and I will be blessed in the field.  (I will be blessed wherever I go)

“The offspring of my body and the produce of my ground and the offspring of my animals, the offspring of my herd and the young of my flock will be blessed. (My children, the ground I walk on, and the work I do will be blessed)

“My basket and my kneading bowl will be blessed. (The works of my hand will be blessed)

“I will be blessed when I come in and will be blessed when I go out.

“The Lord will cause the enemies who rise up against me to be defeated before me; they will come out against me one way, but flee before me seven ways. The Lord will command the blessing upon me in my storehouses and in all that I undertake, and He will bless me in the land which the Lord my God gives me. The Lord will establish me as a people holy [and set apart] to Himself, just as He has sworn to me, if me keep the commandments of the Lord my God and walk [that is, live my life each and every day] in His ways. 10 So all the peoples of the earth will see that I am called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of me. 11 The Lord will give me great prosperity, in the offspring of my body and in the offspring of my livestock and the produce of my ground, in the land which the Lord swore to my fathers to give me. 12 The Lord will open for me His good treasure house, the heavens, to give rain to my land in its season and to bless all the work of my hand; and I will lend to many nations, but I will not borrow. 13 The Lord will make me the head (leader) and not the tail (follower); and I will be above only, and will not be beneath, if I listen and pay attention to the commandments of the Lord my God, which He is commanding me today, to observe them carefully.

14 Do not turn aside from any of the words which I am commanding you today, to the right or to the left, to follow and serve other gods.

The power of the tongue is so important in the life of a believer, in terms of what we say about ourselves to ourselves, to our children and to things around us.  Let’s develop the habit of speaking life to our situations no matter how desperate it looks.
