THE LOVE OF CHRIST COMPELS US TO BECOME BETTER

When I think of Apostle Paul, one of his main teaching was on ‘love’ and there is no way that one would talk about love as a Christian, manifest love without becoming better or even walk in love without becoming a better person.

1 Corin 13: 1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; 13 But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

If we are guided to follow what Apostle Paul said above, we would have no choice but to become better.  As a Christian, going to church, good as it may be, because we are told, in Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching is not what sets us apart.  What sets us apart is our ability to show love in time of trouble, crisis, challenge, sorrow and of course in good times too.

If we are bold enough to say that we love God, then that love has to also reflect on the outside.  Love cannot be hidden.  There is something about loving God that compels us to be kind to those who have hurt us.  When we look at what God did for us, John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.  This is God calling you and I ‘his friends’.   Apostle Paul writes that our love should be real, in Romans 12:Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honour.  In the following chapter, he says in verse 10: Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.  If we are truly filled with the Spirit of the living God, then when we face a situation, and want to take revenge, we will find ourselves showing love instead and that we are told is fulfilling the law.

Do you know that the first fruit of the spirit that is mentioned in Galatians 5:22 is love?.  Love means a lot to God and so it should mean a lot to us in our everyday, walk, talk and action.  The thing about love though is that it grows.  And as it grows, it also deepens and so we have Apostle Paul saying in Ephesians 3: so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love.  I am sure that whenever you look back at what you used to do and what you do now, there is a growth of trying to be better and do things better. (Philp 1:9 and 1 Thes 3:12)   Like I said, love cannot be hidden and in Ephs 4:15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ; our speech also has to demonstrate love and our walk too; Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Wherever we might find ourselves, we are told in 1 Thes 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.  This to means, love should be our covering.

We also have a promise when we show love, in Heb 6: 10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.  Are you showing love to someone or people and they are not repaying you in kind?  Be rest assured that God sees what you are doing.  Love is also transferable, Heb 10: 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.  If I show love and you show love, the world would certainly be a better place.

If we say we are the children of the most high God, then we have no other alternative but to walk in love.  1 Jhn 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
