DEATH HAS NO MORE DOMINION

Matt 27: 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.  51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

The Savior of the world had emerged from three hours of darkness, during which He was separated from God the Father. Why did the Father turned away from Him? It is against the character of God to face sin, so God withdrew Himself from communication with His Son while Jesus bore the guilt of the world’s sin.

Extraordinary events marked the death of Jesus. The sky was completely dark for three hours as Jesus hung on the cross.   At the moment of his last breath, the earth shook, the temple curtain split from top to bottom, and the tombs of saints opened and their bodies raised from the dead.

The crucifixion of Jesus was a part of God’s plan from the very beginning of the birth of Jesus. The sin of mankind would require a sacrifice. The sinless life of Jesus was lived and given so that man could receive salvation and eternal life in heaven.

John 6.40 This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.

And death shall have no dominion. Or in other words the power of death is too weak to overcome us; the effect of death is not enough to defeat us.  Death shall not dominate us. Death shall have no dominion. This is the meaning of eternal life.

Rms 6.4 We have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

But death has no dominion in nature. And even in the deepest depths of winter we know this and it warms our hearts. We know that before long the spring will come, that those hibernating creatures will crawl out of their little tombs and begin to move and mix and mate again; that the trees will blossom and the birds will sing because the earth is budding with food for them and all around – life has overcome death. And we too, being nature’s creatures, find our winter blues fall away when the sun comes and the dark nights fade. We know that death has no dominion because nature tells us.

Sin has no authority over anyone who is in Christ. You are no longer under its dominion. You have received a new identity. You have died out of that old kingdom. You have been raised through Christ into the new kingdom where He—not sin—reigns.

Following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Joseph was given permission to bury Jesus, so he brought fine linen, wrapped the body, laid Jesus in a tomb and rolled a large stone across the entrance. Jesus was in the grave for three days. After the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of Jesus), and Salome prepared spices to anoint Jesus’ body. When they arrived at the tomb, the stone had already been rolled away! They entered the tomb, where an angel said, Mark 16:6-7 “Don’t be alarmed.  You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you’.

What does the crucifixion of Jesus Christ have to do with us? God, who knows what we are are made of, He knew we could not live the sinless life necessary for heaven. So He decided to offer Himself in our place. He did that by becoming a man in the person of Jesus Christ, His own Son.  Jesus lived a sinless life on earth for us.

God had said the punishment for sin is death. Since we all have sinned, Rms 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  We needed someone sinless to die in our place.   Jesus, being sinless, died in our place and became the saving grace of the world. He died for us! Romans 5:10 For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

God doesn’t want us to sin, but if we do sin, then that sin is already legally pardoned and can never condemn or punish us. Does this mean that we should just sin then? Of course not, but if we do sin that sin has already been dealt with in Christ. Does that make it okay to sin. Of course not. We shouldn’t sin. But if we do sin, we have One who has taken the punishment for us and continually reveals our eternal innocence before the Father.

John 2:1-2: My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins.   Now it’s not just legally that sin can no longer have dominion over us. Because of your new reborn nature you can now begin to exercise dominion and experience victory over sin.

Before, when we were under the the law, we were dead to God and alive to sin, but now we have been born again into the domain of grace and are dead to sin and alive to God! Because we died with Christ to sin and were raised up with him into new life with a new nature, we have been set free from sin. We are no longer slaves to sin. Sin no longer has dominion over us to control us anymore. We now have dominion over sin and can exercise that dominion.

We can now present all the parts of our body to God as instruments of righteousness and no longer present them to sin as instruments of unrighteousness. (Rom 6:13). Sin shall not have dominion over us because we have died to our old powerless life under the law and have been raised up with Christ into new powerful life in grace. (Rom 6:14).

The way to exercise dominion is to present the members of our body to God and not to sin. (Rom 6:12,13). We surrender our eyes, our mind, our hands and all other parts to God.   The problem is we’re waiting for God to take the feeling away or to exercise dominion for us. But that’s not how it works and if we’re waiting for that we’ll become disillusioned. God has given us dominion and it’s up to us to exercise it.

But thank God for his grace, that even if we don’t experience full dominion over sin, we still legally always have dominion over sin and therefore, it shall never have dominion over us ever again. And I pray that as you discover your position in Christ and the new nature you have, all because of His grace, that you will begin to experience dominion over sin more and more.

Whatever may be happening around you, no matter what you see or hear, don’t give in to fear but allow death to sin to die in you with the help of the Holy Spirit.  Believe God to fulfil His promise in your life.  May God satisfy you with long life and fulfil your number of days in Jesus name, remember death no longer has dominion over you!
